We hand nail! (This is crucial for a long lasting roof)
Why it’s preferred over nail gun installation -
Hand nailing your roof takes a little longer. But it’s worth the extra time and effort to build a stronger roof.
In coastal areas where high winds are a common threat to your home it’s crucial to use superior roofing materials and superior installation techniques.
Common problems with nail gun installation-
OVERDRIVEN NAILS-
When the nail gun isn’t adjusted properly the nail head can tear the surface which will weaken the shingle tearing off in high winds. Set too high nail guns can also force the nail all the way through the shingle. So the shingle would have nothing holding it on the roof. And keep in mind there are multiple roofers with multiple nail guns installing your roof. Even if they start the day all adjusted perfectly, there will need to be readjusting throughout the job due to varying densities of the materials. Leaks and danger of sections of roof blowing off in a storm are not the only problems with overdriven nails.
"They can also invalidate your shingle’s 30 year/40 year/ lifetime manufacturer’s warranty on day one!"
SIDE DRIVEN NAILS-
Are a common issue due the speed and force inherent in nail gun installation. When this happens the side of the nail head can cut a hole in the shingle which weakens the shingle and can lead to leaks, danger of tearing off and invalidating the manufacturer’s warranty.
UNDER DRIVEN NAILS-
Improper settings also lead to underdriven nails. The under driven nail can cut through the top shingle in addition to not creating proper adhesion for lower shingle. This can cause leaks and put the shingles at risk of being blown off in a storm and of course invalidating your manufacturer’s warranty.
Why is hand nailing the preferred installation technique?
The hammer head is bigger than the nail head so the nail stops at the surface of the shingle. The roofer has more control over the force and can easily resolve any underdriven nails by hitting it again without danger of going through the shingle. Due to the superior strength of hand nailed roofs, hand nailing is required by insurance companies in coastal areas. If it’s better in Galveston it’s better in Katy!
Not every roof that’s installed with nail guns is destined to fail. It will have many more opportunities for weaknesses that could be exploited by storms. And considering that storms are getting stronger and more frequent, we believe it’s not worth the risk for the little bit of money saved.
